Adsense: Why Bloggers Don't Get It

In doing the research for my series of <a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/2005/07/google-adsense.html">Adsense articles</a>, two common ideas kept getting repeated: <ul> <li>My Adsense ads are horrible, they only pay out (insert low dollar figure here) </li> <li>My Adsense CTR is horrible, I only get a (insert extremely low CTR here)</li> </ul> To be fair these comments weren’t coming just from bloggers, but bloggers did make up an overwhelmingly large percentage. I think this stems from a misconception on the part of the bloggers that they are entitled to high payout and CTR. I’d like to spend a little time to share my feelings on this subject. In the early days a blog may just have been an online diary or journal, but like the days of the Nehru jackets, they are gone. What a blog is now is Chronologically Structured Content Management System, as opposed to the classic web hierarchical structured implementation. Let’s be clear, you can still use a blog as your online diary or journal, but nowdays it’s just as likely to be used as a commercial blog. Yes, I did just say commercial blog, and no the earth didn’t open under my feet and swallow me whole for saying it. Let’s take some time to look at a your typical blog. You may post about commercial related subjects like your job, what you like to buy, or even your hobbies. However these posts are all about your life, they are no more commercially viable or attractive than say Aunt Millie’s Holiday Newsletter. Yes we all have an Aunt Millie in our family, every year she sends out a finely crafted newsletter in a coordinating envelope she ordered from paperdirect.com telling us all about her family. We learn how hard her husband works, how many activities her kids are in and how good they are at them. We also read the details of how her scrapbooking business hasn’t taken off yet, but she promises to spend more time on it right after New Years. So if you were a business owner would you want to advertise anywhere on Aunt Millie’s Newsletter? Then why would a business want to pay you top dollar to advertise on your blog? What’s that, you say your blog gets (insert a high number here) of readers per day, surely that has to be worth something? Well did you know Aunt Millie sends out over 800 copies of her holiday newsletter to 17 countries, on 4 continents? Now before you get all fired up about it, understand that I don’t have a problem with you having a personal blog or sharing it with the public. However your expectation that it has value outside of your family/friends/community, is a serious misconception. So what exactly is a commercially viable blog? Don’t think of it as publishing a blog, think of it as publishing an online magazine. You need to start out with good content or articles about a small area or niche topic. You will need lots of content, and unless you are well known, don’t expect much to happen until you’ve written at least 100 and more likely over 200 articles. Yes you will have to devote some time and effort to publicizing and marketing it as well. Once you’ve got a significant focused reader base, that’s the time to slowly ad in the advertising. Now here’s the one that causes lots of people to freak out. BE PREPARED TO GIVE UP SOME PRIME SCREEN REAL ESTATE, IN THE CENTER, ABOVE THE FOLD, TO ADVERTISING. If you’ve worked with print media at all you will know the middle of the right hand page is the most desirable spot inside of a magazine (excluding the cover pages). I’ve sat through meetings where people have said ” … you know we need more right hand pages …”. If you want people to click on your ads, you will need put them where they can see them, above the fold in the center of the screen, in a prominent location. Yes I can almost here the keys typing for the flame comments and emails now. Before you hit that send button though, ask yourself this, are you building a space sough after by advertisers, or are you working on Aunt Millie’s Newsletter? No I don’t think your pages should be filled with ads, in fact quite the opposite, there should always be more content than advertising, ALWAYS! Next thing, lose the fancy graphics and eye-candy from your template. Yes I know you may have paid for a fancy template, maybe you had your niece who’s a graphic artist design something for you, or you really like the way that spinning flaming platypus looks in your page header. Here’s the thing, it’s detracting from your content. Graphics should be simple, understated, and support the content, not overpower or compete with it. Now before some art student wearing a beret, corduroy jacket with elbow patches, and smoking a pipe or French cigarette, writes and calls me a Philistine, stop and think. Are you designing a commercially attractive and viable space, or are you designing an intricate macrame border for Aunt Millie’s Newsletter? Remember keep it simple and to the point. Yes I know you feel like I just ripped off the band-aid, and now it hurts. Sorry but someone had to do it. I know some of you are still out there reading saying ‘but can’t I still have this … do we have to get rid of this … I really like that …’. Well I’m not your second grade teacher who’s going to tell you everything’s all right, that you don’t have to change a thing, and put a scooby-doo sticker on your shirt to make you feel better. If you want a blog that makes you more money than you spend at Starbucks every Tuesday, you will need to get serious about what you’re doing. If none of this sounds incredibly fun, and really sounds pretty close to actual work, here’s the way I see it, getting an Adsense check for $5 is fun, getting an Adsense check for $500 or $5000 is work. Disclaimers: I don’t actually have an Aunt Millie, she’s a fictional character. But like you, I do have relatives who send out holiday newsletters. Yes I know the minimum Adsense payment is $100, so you never could get a $5 check, but I was just making a point, mmkay?

<h2>Build an Empire?</h2> When you’re deciding to become a website publisher you will fall into one of two broad categories: <ul> <li>Publish 100 websites that each earn $1 a day profit</li> <li>Publish 1 website that earns $100 a day profit</li> </ul> The reality of it is, most people end up somewhere in between. Having 100 websites leaves you with maintenance, management and content issues. Having one website leaves you open to all sort of fluctuations (search engines algorithm’s, market trends, etc). You can adapt your plan on the way, but you’ll have an easier time if you start out going in the direction of where you want to end up. <h2>General or Niche</h2> You can build your website around general topics or niche ones. Generally speaking niche websites work better with adsense. First off the ad targeting is much better. Secondly as you have a narrow focus your writing naturally becomes more expert in nature. Hopefully this makes you more authority in your field. If this is your first try at building an adsense website, make it about something you enjoy. It will make the process much easier and less painful to accomplish. You should however make sure that your topic has enough of an ad inventory and the payout is at a level you are comfortable with. You may love medieval folk dancing, but the pool of advertisers for that subject is very small (in fact it’s currently zero). Once you’ve gotten the hang of how Adsense works on a website, you are going to want to dabble in some high paying keywords, you may even be tempted to buy a high paying keyword list. This does come with some dangers. First off the level of fraud is much higher on the big money terms. Secondly there is a distortion of the supply and demand relationship for these terms. Everyone wants ads on their website that make $35 or more a click, however the number of advertisers who are willing to pay that much is pretty limited. Additionally the competition for that traffic is going to be stiff. So, don’t try to run with the big dogs if you can’t keep up. If you have to ask if you’re a big dog, then chances are, you’re not. I have used a high dollar keywords report from <a href="http://www.cashkeywords.com/">cashkeywords.com</a> and was pleased with my results (see <a href="http://www.wolf-howl.com/2005/07/cash-keywords-free-offer-recap.html">cash keywords free offer recap</a>). <h2>New Sites, Files and Maintenance</h2> When you’re building a new site don’t put adsense on it until it’s finished. In fact I’d go even farther and say don’t put adsense on it until you have built inbound links and started getting traffic. If you put up a website with “lorem ipsum” dummy or placeholder text, your adsense ads will almost certainly be off topic. This is often true for new files on existing websites, especially if the topic is new or different. It may take days or weeks for google’s media bot to come back to your page and get the ads properly targeted. TIP: If you start getting lots of traffic from a variety of IP’s you will speed this process up dramatically. I like to build my sites using include files. I put the header, footer and navigation in common files. It makes it much easier to maintain and manage. I also like to put my adsense code in include files. If I want/need to change my adsense code, it’s only one file I have to work with. TIP: I also use programming to turn the adsense on or off. I can change one global variable to true or false and my adsense ads will appear or disappear. <h2>Managing URL’s and channels</h2> Adsense channels is one area where it’s really easy to go overboard with stats. You can set up URL channels to compare how one website is doing to another. You can also set up sub channels for each URL. If you wanted to you do something channels like this: <ul> <li>domain1.com - 728 banner</li> <li>domain1.com - 336 block</li> <li>domain1.com - text link</li> <li>domain2.com - 728 banner</li> <li>domain2.com - image banner</li> <li>domain2.com - 336 block</li> <li>domain3.com - 300 block</li> </ul> While this is great for testing and knowing who clicks where and why, it makes your reporting a little wonky. Your total number will always be correct but when you look at your reports with a channel break down things will get displayed multiple times and not add up to correct total. Makes things pretty confusing, so decide if you really need/want that level of reporting detail. TIP: At the very least you want to know what URL is generating the income so be sure to enter distinct URL channels.

How Does Google Detects Invalid Clicks - A Must Know For AdSense Publisher.

A lot of Google AdSense publishers are banned from the Google AdSense program for invalid clicks. Some of these Google AdSense publishers manage to get their AdSense account reinstated. However, majority of them failed to do so. As a result, they are banned from the Google AdSense program. Google does not reveal any specific details about invalid clicks in order to protect their proprietary clicks fraud detection technology. I am telling you with my practical experience that nothing would work unless you are prepared to go that extra mile. You should get hold of the adsense secrets that are unique to your site. You must be prepared to make continuous changes and measure effectiveness on a continuous basis. Following are simple but effective steps successfully followed by the author, which may help you to improve your adsense earnings by five folds or even more! Artistic Way To Be Discreet - The font, color and texture should match with the rest of the page. This will make the ad looks like part of the article. You have the options to use either an ideally matching color or a contrasting color. Either way is effective. Use The Maximum but Have a Balance - Always try to use maximum number of adsense ads in each page. Don't lose balance however! Ads should not dominate the page. Measure the effectiveness of Ad units - Always make use of Google Adsense channels to identify which position or format has produced high click through rates. Be prepared to change the Ad format, color and position according to your findings. How to simply boost your referral success

Ok, if you are reading this post right now, I have to assume you've read the previous post. If not, please do so. It's crucial for the understanding of this post. Ok, now were good to go! As you have learned in the previous post, the referral buttons are a good way to add money to your site's income. Now we're going to learn how we can make the most out of the buttons, and Boost our referral's success. First of all, and most important- Choose the referral button, that suits your site the best. For example if you're sites outlet and backgrounds are all pink, do not use an orange referral button. Now you must be thinking- 'Well, that's obvious!'. My answer to you is- 'Yes it is'. But still, you find many web sites and blogs, which make this newbie mistake. And they do it because they think that if the button is BIG & COLORFUL, every one will want to click it. And as you probably know- That's not the case. Another thing is making sure the size is right. As I mentioned above, do not always go for the biggest button. Sometimes choosing a nice elegant button, which sits nicely in your site, is better than a huge ugly button. Secondly- Choose the most attractive content for your referral buttons. Google offers us plenty of different contents for the buttons. I personally think that the most attractive content for the Google adsense program is, "Generate revenue from your website". It's simple, and most important- it tells you exactly why you should be interested in it. For the FireFox referral button, I think the most attractive content is, "Browse the web faster. Get FireFox with Google toolbar". And yet again- it's simple and informative. And last but not least- Make sure you know what you're doing. Do not put referral buttons in the middle of the text. It doesn't look good. It looks as if you are intentionally trying to make the reader click on the button. You need to let people make their own decision, you cant just stick it their and expect people to click it. If someone really wants to download FireFox because he believes Google's browser provides faster browsing and better features, he will click on the referral button. You can mention somewhere on your site that if someone is interested in the software, he is welcome to download it easily threw the referral button on your site. But make sure you never encourage someone to click on a button. It is against Google's policy, and it can get you're account banned. Never say something like- 'Click this Button!! If you click it you will have a happy marriage!" (I hope you get the idea..) That's it for now. Next update soon, make sure you come back.

Ok so what do I mean by "something else"? I mean I'm going to let your mind relax for a while. Why & How? Why- Some times, concentrating on the same thing (in our case AdSense and websites) for a long time, is not that good. You need to let your mind relax, think about and see other things. How- Ever hear about PhotoBlogs? I personally find looking at pictures very relaxing. This PhotoBlog I'm going to show you, has plenty of beautiful pictures from all around the world. Take a look, maybe choose one for your Desktop's background, relax, enjoy, and then, go back to work. <a href="http://picsee.blogspot.com" style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Picsee, Simply Beautiful.</a> This is actually something I do quite often. I work hard, then post a few more tips and tricks, and after all of that I'm kind of tired and out of idea's. So what I do is look at different PhotoBlogs to relax and think. And then when I go back to work, I'm refreshed and ready to keep going. I hope you enjoy the pictures and videos =) Amigo!

What I'm saying is extremely simple: Traffic generates clicks, which generates money, which is what we all (or most of us) call success. And like in most things in this world, the first step is always the hardest one; The first job interview, the first time we ride a bike, the first time mankind reached the moon.. And believe me I can keep on going for a very long time. Ok, got that.. The first step is always the hardest step.. understood.. got ya.. it's ok.. move on.. YOU CAN CONTINUE TALKING..! Good then I will. Our main goal, as publishers, is to reach the max amount of visitor. Why? Well for some of us it means more clicks = more money, for others it just means more readers (which is fine). One of the main ways to increase traffic to your site, is to publish your site in as many places as possible. If it means sending email's to your friends and asking them forward it to their friends, or if it's joining different forum's and adding a link to your signature, or Adding your site to different directories.. There are a number of different ways as you can see. But, one of the best ways, is adding your site to sites that their main purpose is to help you generate more traffic to your own site. Wait a sec.. What you're saying is that the best traffic generating technique is posting your website on a site that it's only purpose is to generate traffic for other sites right? Then what I don't understand is how exactly that site benefits? What does it get out of this?! -Traffic. And I'm now going to link you to a site just like the one I described. Google's Next Move - Video Game Ads?

Since AdWords was launched in 2001, Google has expanded to image ads, video ads, and print ads, and has frequently been rumored to be entering radio and television. While many think that television ads (ala Spot Runner) could be Google's next major move, they may be neglecting a potentially larger opportunity: in-game video game advertising. Earlier this year Massive Incorporated, a video game advertising network, announced a landmark deal with Major League Baseball and 2K Sports to provide dynamic advertising in the popular video game Major League Baseball 2K6. According to their press release, "Massive's Network and technology allow MLB Advanced Media and 2K Sports titles to leverage dynamic advertising for ever-fresh brand messaging in their games, mirroring the rapidly changing and expanding advertising opportunities in the live action sports industry." Why Should Google Care? The Entertainment Software Association put U.S. sales of video game hardware and software at $7.3 billion back in 2004, a figure that rivals Hollywood box office revenue. In-game video game advertising is nothing new for the booming game industry - large companies have been buying static advertisements in games for years. What is new is the expansion of online gaming into the mainstream. Once reserved for only PC Gamers, console gamers have now discovered a whole new world of competition over a broadband connection. In a recent interview with TechNewsWorld, EA's John Schappert, who oversees the largest interactive game studio in the world, was asked about in-game advertising: "In-game ad integration is a growing business where we see both advertisers and consumers looking for more. It's an additional revenue stream that is still small, but growing. There's the potential for scalability in this area with dynamically-served ads. It's still in the early stages [in terms of] how in-game ads will grow in significance." Starting with Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PS2, and continuing into the next generation of online gaming with Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii, and Sony's PS3, it has become a virtual certainty that nearly all gamers will be playing while connected to a broadband connection. With that broadband connection comes an advertising opportunity that's hard to ignore. Is History Repeating Itself? The potential flaw in what Massive Incorporated does is that their ad network still only includes the large advertisers. Massive's website gives no specific information regarding how to purchase advertising, only mentioning that "blue-chip" advertisers can work with their "veteran" sales team to start an account. I think it's safe to say that small businesses aren't their target market. So while they are implementing dynamic ads, those ads are still only affordable to larger businesses. Anyone familiar with internet advertising can see the potential for history to repeat itself. Way back in 1996, long before Overture (now Yahoo! Search Marketing) and Google AdWords, a company called DoubleClick pioneered website advertising. Their downfall, however, was that they required a formal sales contract, limiting their potential client base to only large companies. Overture and AdWords made it easy for the small advertiser and small site owner to participate in their ad networks, essentially opening their service to anyone on the web. Several years later, one would think that Google is keeping a watchful eye on what's going on over at Massive Incorporated. Massive may be the first to enter the market, but it's hard to ignore the fact that the small business owner remains shut out. Could Google make Massive the next DoubleClick? How Would Google Do It There's no doubt that with the best programmers in the world Google is capable of developing and improving upon the technology that Massive has. It's also not hard to imagine advertisers paying per thousand impressions (PPM) for their text or image ads to be shown in specific games, much like they do now for specific sites. The tough part for Google, however, would be the distribution of those ads. As opposed to signing up websites to display their ads by copying some code on to their site, Google would have to work with game programmers throughout the development process. This would be much more time consuming and would be a much larger risk for Google. In the same way that Massive signed the contract with 2K, Google would have to sign large contracts with game developers and work with them for several months to integrate their ads. This enforces the fact that the main difference between what happened with DoubleClick and what could happen with video games is that it would probably be more work for Google to distribute their ads over multiple channels (i.e. more games). Since each game is programmed differently, there is no game equivalent to the JavaScript used in all AdSense ads. Every game would need to be tailored to Google's ad network individually. Difficult: yes. Impossible for Google: no way. When Will They Do It? In my opinion it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. The potential revenue from the gaming industry is too big for Google to ignore. Oh, and if you still aren't convinced, consider this: Microsoft, one of Google's main competitors, also produces the Xbox 360. If Microsoft decided to integrate their newly launched adCenter into Xbox games, would it really surprise anyone if Google countered by announcing a deal with Sony or Nintendo to integrate in-game dynamic advertising for the PS3 or the Wii? This is Google Explanation to what Page Rank is: PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query. Integrity Google's complex, automated methods make human tampering with our results extremely difficult. And though we do run relevant ads above and next to our results, Google does not sell placement within the results themselves (i.e., no one can buy a higher PageRank). Hello =) As you might have noticed, my page rank has climbed up from 0/10 to 4/10 in just 3 weeks! (My predicted PR for the next PR update is 5/10) And since this site is a tips and tricks site, it won't be nice of me not to share with you how I achieved this great page rank in 3 weeks ;) (If you have no idea what you PR is, or do have an idea but want to check you future PR, check it using this Great tool- <a href="http://amigo.sitesled.com/SEO_TOOLS/Google%20PageRank%20Prediction.html" target="blank">Google Page Rank Prediction</a>) Ok, so here it is: The best thing to do in order to see an immediate boost in your PR is to exchange links with similar sites. The higher the PR of the site you are exchanging with is, the faster you PR will go up and the higher it will get. For example, if you exchange links with 4 sites which have a PR of 1-2 you will probably see no change at all for a very long time, and if it does change it will only rise to a maximum of 2. But say for example you exchange with 1 similar content site which has a PR of 3-5, you will see a faster and higher rise to your own sites PR. So what you want to do is exchange links with similar content sites, which have a high page rank. Its better to exchange with 2 sites which have a 3 or 4 PR than with 10 sites which have a 1-2 page rank. So bear that in mind. The next thing which will help you improve your PR is submitting your site to different directories. This is much less effective, but if you cannot find link exchange partners it is useful. That's all the tips I can provide, because that's all I did to get my PR 4. Of course make sure your content is good in order for people to want to exchange links with you.
